Love Over Gold — Dire Straits (1982)
The next album in my internationally famous series of the greatest albums of all time is Love Over Gold by Dire Straits. Most people would probably pick Brothers in Arms because of its massive commercial success (my very first CD), but who says only one album by a band can make the list?
Love Over Gold doesn’t have the hits of Brothers in Arms—the tracks are simply too long for that (the album consists of five songs!). But the atmosphere, the tight, seamless production, and the lyrics fascinate me again and again. Not a year goes by without me pulling this record out and enjoying it from start to finish.
This work also has a special meaning for me, in that it plays an important role in an (unpublished) book I wrote in the winter of 2024—I’ll write more about that elsewhere.
On the album’s release date, I was 10 years old and had not yet had any contact with Dire Straits. That gave me the chance, from the mid-80s onward, to pick up their entire back catalog.
For me, Dire Straits are a CD band. Crackle is not part of the deal.
Recommendation: listen to it on long, late-night drives along lonely country roads.

Das nächste Album aus meiner international berühmten Reihe mit den besten Alben aller Zeiten ist Love Over Gold von den Dire Straits. Die meisten würden wegen des gigantischen kommerziellen Erfolgs sicherlich Brothers in Arms (meine allererste CD) wählen, aber wer sagt denn, dass nur ein Album einer Band auf die Bestenliste kommen kann?
Love Over Gold verfügt nicht über die Hits wie Brothers in Arms, dazu sind die Stücke schlichtweg zu lang (das Album besteht aus fünf Liedern!). Aber die Stimmung, die kompakte, übergangslose Produktion und die Texte faszinieren mich immer wieder. Kein Jahr vergeht, ohne dass ich diese Platte hervorkrame und am Stück genieße.
Zudem hat dieses Werk in dem Sinne eine spezielle Bedeutung für mich, da es eine wichtige Rolle in einem (unveröffentlichten) Buch spielt, das ich im Winter 2024 geschrieben habe – an anderer Stelle werde ich dazu mehr schreiben.
Am Releasedatum des Albums war ich 10 Jahre alt und habe zu dieser Zeit noch keine Berührung mit den Dire Straits gehabt. Das gab mir die Gelegenheit, mir ab Mitte der 80er Jahre den kompletten Backkatalog anzuschaffen.
Die Dire Straits sind für mich eine CD-Band. Knistern gehört nicht zum guten Ton.
